What does fish oil do?
Fish oils are an excellent source of the omega 3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Researchersdiscovered 72% of patients taking the marine oils did not experience a relapse in symptoms. One year later, 60% of the same patients taking the oils were symptom-free.
The patients taking the placebo didn’t do as well; they had almost 2.5 times more relapses and only 26% stayed symptom-free.
Researchers concluded enteric-coated fish oil supplements may be an effective treatment for reducing the rate of relapse in patients with Crohn’s Disease. While this is only one study, The results are encouraging. Fish oil may have a role in the management of Crohn's disease and other inflammatory bowel diseases.
